Behind these large-scale "images-tableaux", Under Cover tells a very specific south-african funeral ritual. The serie of 13 photographs was realized in the big cemetery of Soweto (SA), called Avalon.
Traditionally, when the tombstone is placed, the stele is immediately covered with fabric and other material for a period of time going from weeks to years, until the important “unveiling ceremony”. During this second celebration, family and friends will uncover and bring to light the tombstone, as well as the identity of the deceased; a ceremony not anymore to honor the life on earth of the person but to celebrate his life after death.
Put out of their context with a black background, these steles reveal many different forms: Outsider art sculptures, totems, under construction official monuments or anonymous portraits; Time is frozen. The details of the veiling elements can be seen as hints for the discovery of these hidden identities been become in a certain way generic.
